Modeling a Hypothetical Resource

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, APS, capacity, bottlenecks, constraint, resource

PlanetTogether’s APS software is a powerful and effective tool for modeling your current plant setup. But what happens when you need to model theoretical expansion plans? Maybe you have a bottleneck that you’d like to get rid of. Maybe you recently expanded your plant, and now you’re curious about which machines would be the most effective. Or maybe you’d like to see what effect adding to your labor force would have. Through the use of “What-If” scenarios, PlanetTogether users can do just that.

Managing Expiration and Shelf Life Dates

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, APS, capacity, Brewery, bottlenecks, constraint, resource, beer brewing, ingredients, expired, fresh

No one wants to buy food that is going to expire before they have time to consume it. No distributer wants to buy food that’s going to expire before they have time to sell it. Similarly, no manufacturer can use or sell inventory that is out of specification due to aging. That is why many food manufacturers have both a shelf life date and an expiration date which must be managed carefully during inventory and production planning. Unfortunately, keeping track of expiration date and shelf lives of intermediates and finished products is complicated, especially in a dynamic environment with frequent schedule changes.

Dealing with Ingredients, On and Off Season

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, APS, capacity, Brewery, bottlenecks, constraint, resource, beer brewing, ingredients, expired, fresh

Each season brings its own harvest. Summer is filled with strawberries, blueberries, and avocados. Fall brings pumpkins and sweet potatoes. Spring has rhubarb and asparagus. While, many fruits and vegetables are available year round, their increased price often makes them cost prohibitive. Other ingredients, such as certain fish and meats, are completely unavailable.

Outsourcing Jobs with PlanetTogether

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, APS, capacity, Brewery, bottlenecks, constraint, resource, beer brewing, ingredients, expired, fresh

There is a common phrase “no one is superman”. Well, neither is any manufacturing company – they all have limited capacity. There are two main reasons why manufacturing companies outsource jobs. The first is when a job’s requirements surpass the plant’s capability. Other times, demand peaks beyond capacity requiring excess work to be outsourced to a contract manufacturer.

Beer- Fresher than ever before

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, APS, capacity, Brewery, bottlenecks, constraint, resource, beer brewing, expired, fresh

It’s no secret that supermarkets hide the freshest food underneath or behind older food. That is why it is not uncommon to see people reaching around 10 gallons of milk in a supermarket refrigerator to grab the milk in the very back.

Managing Constraints

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, ERP, APS, capacity, bottlenecks, constraint, resource

Constraints are present in every plant; even if you have enough capacity on average, there are likely “clumps” of workload that will create temporary bottlenecks. These constraints whether or not anticipated cloud your planner’s ability to create an optimal schedule. PlanetTogether’s finite constraint-based planning provides insight on where and when bottlenecks will occur and enables your planner to create an optimal schedule.

Many wonder to what extent PlanetTogether can handle constraints. Below are our answers.

Scheduling Operations Continuously

Topics: capacity planning, production planning, finite capacity, users, project management, ERP, APS, capacity, bottlenecks, constraint, resource

A third of your goods are finished and ready to be packaged, your packager is set up and ready to go, but your current schedule does not tell your team to start packaging until all the goods are completed.  As a result your average flow time is two hours longer than what it could have been had your operations been performed more continuously. PlanetTogether software understands this problem and allows for overlap in situations where you want the job operations to be performed more continuously.
