The term “Smart Factory” refers to a workspace that has used technology to increase its lead in a manufacturing environment. Smart Factory operates with a highly digitized shop floor where data is collected on resources and processes. This data helps the factory create the optimal working environment where progress proceeds on pace, expectations are clearly dictated, and limits costly surprises included with running a manufacturing business.

The Internet of Things (IoT) now makes it possible for devices to communicate with each other. This makes it so Smart Factories receive real-time data on issues that human workers may miss or not even be aware of. Smart Factories now have the ability to oversee the entire production process. Presenting peace of mind that is rarely seen in the industry.

A Smart Factory does not deploy one software across the entire shop floor for immediate improvements. This is the hope of many leaders in the manufacturing space but it’s an unrealistic outlook and hope that leads to disappointment. Rather, the Smart Factory idea is based on utilizing a combination of various Industry 4.0 technologies to optimize a shop floor. The benefits may take time and are not usually immediate. Here are some brief descriptions of technologies you may think about deploying in your company:

Industrial IoT - This concept features interconnected devices updating users on resource production.

Sensors - Sensors are one component of IoT that can monitor temperature, water detection, and other environmental factors on the shop floor.

Cloud Computing - Smart factories can use Cloud Computing to store, process, and share data with associates, teammates, and clients.

Big Data Analytics - The accumulation of data collected by sensors and other devices into actionable plans to benefit the company.

Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) Software - APS software like PlanetTogether works with ERP, MPS, and MRP to form the best-optimized schedule for your business.

By embracing the technology behind Smart Factories, your business can be better prepared for the future.
