Unable to Remove or Stop the APS Server Manager Service

What to do when the PlanetTogether Software Installer cannot remove or stop the APS Server Manager Service?

The most common cause of this issue is when you install the software files while the Server Manager Service is running.

In the PlanetTogether Software Installer, you may be stuck on the Removing Services screen or see an error message appear (shown below).

To fix this, you will need to stop the service manually. This article will guide you through the steps of manually stopping the APS Server Manager service and allow you to complete the installation process.

1) Ensure that all APS-related services are stopped

  1. On your Windows machine, go to the Services app.
  2. Check that all instance-related services are stopped. These start with "APS" and are followed by the name of the instance, version number, and service name.
  3. You can try to stop the APS Server Manager service. However, if you get an error message, continue with the following steps.

2) Get the Server Manager service PID (process identifier).

  1. To manually stop the APS Server Manager service, you will need to get the PID from the Task Manager.
    1. The Task Manager can be opened by pressing [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Esc] on the keyboard or by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting "Task Manager."
  2. Go to the Services tab and note the PID associated with the APS Server Manager service.

3) Manually stop the Server Manager Service

  1. Once you have the PID, you will need to open a Command Prompt.
    1. You can open a Command Prompt by selecting the search button on your machine and typing 'cmd.' Note: You may need to select 'Run as administrator' to be able to force the services to stop manually.
    2. Type "taskkill /pid XXXX /f" then press [Enter].
    3. You can now double-check that all APS-related services are stopped before starting the installation process.
